How to Use a Bottle Cap to Seal a Plastic Bag

Sealable zip-top bags are great for storage, but if you buy plastic bags in bulk you can find yourself stuck with un-sealable bags. A home-centric blog called Re-Nest suggests an easy, green and thrifty way to seal these bags using an old Plastic Caps(KEXON) at home.

All you need to do is cut off the top of the bottle and take off the cap. Push the bag through the bottle neck, fold it over the edges, and twist the cap back on. Please read our step-by-step instructions below.

Cut up a disposable water bottle and keep the neck and top, as pictured in the photo.

Insert the plastic bag through the neck and screw the top to seal.

Test the bag to see if it’s air-tight and water-tight. The bag is made to be air-tight (such that water will not leak); the secret lies with the top and screw cap!

Now, your bag has an air and water tight seal – and you didn’t have to waste the bottle or the bag. You also no longer have to waste twist ties or rubber bands to seal you bags.

Foam Pump Bottle Use

Inside the pump of the Foam Pump(KEXON) Bottle is a little mesh screen that mixes the soap with air to produce the foam. The holes are microscopic (79 microns – very tiny!), and can easily get clogged. The manufacturer does not recommend the addition of any solid particle, even if it is under 79 microns, as solid particles tend to clump together, making them too big to pass through the mesh. Micas, pigments and any type of glitter are too big to work in the foamy pump bottles.

If you want to color your liquid soap, use dye approved for cosmetic use. These work similarly to food coloring and do not contain any solid particles big enough to clog the mesh inside the pump.

Usage and Care

Bottles can be refilled and used again and again. The manufacturer has tested the bottle/pump design and found it mechanically works for up to 12,000 pumps per unit. In practical application it may be considerably less, depending on the soap used and the care and environment of the pump.

The pumps are not designed to be used under running water. Use in the shower is not recommended and the bottles should not be placed or washed under running water. Doing so may allow water to seep down the neck and get into the air chamber located beneath the pump.

Do not overfill the bottles. If you actually measure out the right amount of liquid for the bottle size, you’ll see that it doesn’t actually fill to the very top of the bottle. This is to prevent liquid from getting into the air chamber.

As the pump is used, there is residual liquid on the screen. If the pump is not used frequently, that soap liquid can dry, creating a film on the screen which can ultimately clog the screen making the pump hard to use.

The pump mechanism has a small amount of lubricant in order to keep the pump moving smoothly. While I haven’t been able to get confirmation from the manufacturer, it seems that some soaps eat away at the lubricant, reducing its effectiveness over time. So far I have not been able to identify why the lubricant is affected by some soaps and not others.

Cleaning Plastic Pump Parts

I handwash clean my parts and bottles daily with dish soap after every Plastic Pump(KEXON) session, or with the medela soap after every 2 pumps (I still handwash them before I dump in in a bowl to soak). The pump instructions say to just pump soapy water trough the pump. Then rinse. I did this. But I wasn’t satisfied so I took the pump apart & wiped it down with soapy water, & rinsed. This is bit time consuming.Then at the end of the day I steam sterilize the parts with the medela microwave bag.

I just can’t get the nasty hard calcium buildup from the water off the parts. I heard soaking them in vinegar works to take the hard water stains off.

To hand-wash parts in the sink, you’ll need a separate wash basin, a dedicated sponge or bottle brush, clean paper towels, and vinegar

Fill up a wash basin with vinegar.

Add your pump parts and ‘swoosh’ them around.

Wash each part part thoroughly; be careful with the membranes.

Rinse thoroughly in cool water.

Set to air dry on a clean paper towel away.

But generally they were unaware of the range of potential applications for them, and the specific reasons for selecting non-metallic rather than metallic pumps.

Corrosion resistance was identified as the major attribute of non-metallic pumps. But their abrasion resistance and ability to avoid metallic contamination of the product they are pumping, thus preserving its purity, also are important characteristics. Of even greater significance is the inert chemical nature of the thermoplastics, which are suitable for use over the full pH range. This property simplifies the choice of the specific material, and extends the usefulness and service life of a given pump in a variety of applications.

Several other attributes of plastic pumps, in addition to their being chemically inert and resistant to abrasion, are worth taking into account. For instance, they are light, being 25 to 50 percent the weight of the metallic items they can replace. Since the plastic parts will not rust or seize, they are easy to service, and their initial cost is lower than pumps fabricated with exotic alloys.

The Impact of Component Material Selection on Plastic Pump Reliability

Selecting the right Plastic Pump(KEXON) type and sizing it correctly are critical components to the success of any Plastic Pump application. Equally important is selecting construction materials. The initial cost of these materials is normally the first consideration. Operational costs, replacement costs and longevity of service and repair costs will, however, determine the actual cost of the pump during its lifetime.

Factors that must be considered in selecting materials for wetted pump parts are, for example, user’s experience, expected pump life, intermittent or continuous duty, pumping of hazardous or toxic liquids, condition of the liquid, pump suction energy level, and conditions of service (especially suction conditions).
